Kiezpoetry is a bilingual Slam Poetry show, created to give you both the feel and flow of German poetry and the ability to understand what’s going on. An English-speaking host will guide you through the show, where three poets will perform one round of German poetry and one round of English poetry for you. In an interactive system, you can vote the winner of the event and have him or her perform again.

Poetry Slam, originally an American invention, has become an important part of German literature- and event-culture. Every year, the German-Language National Slam championship is one of the biggest literature events in the world, with several thousand people in the audience. Berlin can be regarded as a poetry capital: Every month, more then 30 regular poetry slam take place in bars, theatres, cafés and universities, not counting innumerable open mic nights and stage readings. A broad diversity of poetry styles and event formats have developed, making each Poetry Slam a unique and authentic Berlin experience. The German poetry slam scene has overtaken the US scene, with poets travelling throughout the country, learning and sharing from each other and bringing the art of spoken word even further.

We want you to be able to experience this typical Berlin event, even though you’re not German-speaking (or just learning).

This show is a private event which you and your group (minimum 20) can book directly with us on the date and time of your choice. This brings several advantages to you:

  • Flexibility: If you contact us minimum 7 days in advance, we will do our best to fit your time schedule, be it before or after dinner. Poet and Kiezpoetry-host Jesko Habert is also an experienced Tour Director himself, so he knows your troubles with a group not always being on time – we won’t start without you!
  • Safety: We’ll make sure it’s in a safe and easily reachable area. Also we will have the location private to ourselves, which gives special safety when you’re travelling with underaged. Moreover: They can enter the bar without you having to worry they could be served alcohol if they’re not allowed to.
  • Cultural awareness: Not only will our host give some educational input and guide through the event in English – we will also make sure, that all poets respect a 100% no-swearing policy.
  • Experienced poets: Being connected to the Berlin poetry slam scene, we can showcase you a selection of three fabulous poets, that will amaze you both with German-language, lyrical poetry and English-language poetry, storytelling and comedy. Depending on your dates of choice you will meet the following artists:
    • Jessy James LaFleur, spoken word artist and rapper, who performs in German, English and French, and is a host of uncountable poetry events in and outside Berlin. She also gives successful workshops in penitentiaries and performes on international poetry stages and TED-talks. Revolutionary, deeply lyrical poetry!
    • Temye Tesfu, beat-poet and poetry slammer, who is being compared to artists like Allen Ginsberg and known for his intense staccato-voice and political content. He won the German poetry championship twice in the category team-slam. Lyrical, almost musical art!
    • Vux, an upcoming Berlin-based poet, who has won the hearts of the East German audience with her emotional and direct lyrics. 2016 she surprised the Berlin scene by entering the finals of the Berlin-Brandenburg championship as the only non-comic poet. Down to your heart!
    • Curtis Gassert, storyteller and performance-artist, and a US-expat who has been a know figure at a handful of Berlins slam events for years. His deeply personal and introvert poetry lives especially by his extrovert performance. A combination, that draws you right into his world!
    • Paul Cossmer, improv-artist and poet, is also Berlins youtube-embassador of young youtubers with his channel about world literature in 3 minutes. In his perfomances, he brings together improvisational talent, extensive stage performance and young, flowing poetry. Definitely a performance artist!
    • Marvin Weinstein, spoken word artist and slam host, who combines wicked rhyme schemes and mystical analogies with storys of our everyday-lifes. 2016 he took part in the Berlin-Brandenburg and the German championship of poetry slam and keeps electrifying the audiences from small pub-poetry to thousand-people concert halls. Advanced rhymes, smart word-playing!
    • Soar, poet and author, who also created the multimedia-project “Poetry-in-Motion”.  She writes in English, German, Romanian and Italian on the themes of love, human values, life and positive thinking in a classic, lyrical flow. Multilingual, intertwined poetry!
    • Jesko Habert, rap-poetry artist and author, who performs in German, English and Spanish, and hosts several poetry events in Berlin. He brings together political lyrics with emotional, flowing poetry and performed in Lima, Oslo, Toronto and all over Germany. A mixture of conscious-rap and storytelling!

Location: Depending on the exact dates and group-size of your booking, we will be flexible with the locations – if needed, we would even come to your hotels seminary room (we’re equipped with all the sound-technique we need and can bring it to basically everywhere in Berlin). Our standard location however is the Strudelka, a cosy Vienna-style café and bar in the original Berlin-area Wedding: close to the ring-train S41/42 and thus easily accesible from everywhere, still off the mainstream touristic areas. If your group is too big for that, our first option will be the Prime Time Theater, which usually hosts a live-theatre soap opera, but is often available on Mondays and Tuesdays. It is also in Wedding, even closer to the very same S-train station.

Dates: In 2017 we will focus on Mondays and Tuesdays of your choice. Other weekdays might be possible as well, but remain a question of location – please request in advance. Regarding the time of day, we are highly flexible. For the flair, we recommend after your dinner, but afternoon shows can be arranged as well.

Your group will get a private 90 minute slam show in a central location at a date of your choice and a constant pre-contact to suit your planning.
